China And Russia Plot Taiwan Invasion

US intelligence officials assess that Russia and China are working more closely together on military issues, including a potential invasion of Taiwan, prompting new planning across the government to counter a potential scenario in which the countries fight in coordination.

“We see China and Russia, for the first time, exercising together in relation to Taiwan and recognizing that this is a place where China definitely wants Russia to be working with them, and we see no reason why they wouldn’t,” Director of National Intelligence Avril Haines said Thursday in testimony to Cong…  Read more

How about the fact that Ukraine routed Russia's navy in the black sea, and broke its blockade, using only cheap submarine drones and anti ship missiles?

 @ChoughLouieDemocrat from Minnesota agreed…2wks2W

The Black Sea situation says more about the Russian navy than about Ukraine.

Furthermore, President Xi has a super tough call ...

CONTINUE spending massive $300 billion on empire building army when NO ONE IS THREATENING China

OR

Divert the funds to rebuild CONFIDENCE in China's rapidly COLLAPSING economy to prevent SPARKING a China Spring among the 21% unemployed youth soon to be joined by a massive 11.7 million new graduates.

 @DopeyDuckMountain from Connecticut commented…2wks2W

China doesn't need to land troops in Taiwan. China can simply blockade shipping lanes around Taiwan and starve it into submission. China can launch cruise missiles from its mainland, without sending any ships into harms way. Just look at what the Houthis are doing, with much more primitive missiles.

 @D1rectMantisDemocrat from Virginia disagreed…2wks2W

both of those steps would mean a war is started, and they'd be starting a war from a position of "not actually having invaded and controlled Taiwan." not smart.

 @L3ftLeaningMariaLibertarianfrom Michigan commented…2wks2W

Americans can use "the US' invasion of Florida" to understand "China's invasion of Taiwan."

 @AboardHouseRepublican from Georgia commented…2wks2W

An invasion of Taiwan is pretty much an impossibility...

1) The US Navy would crush China's Navy

2) The US Air Force and Navy would dominate the skies around Taiwan making an Invasion impossible

3) The US would blockade China, causing its economy to tank. At the same time the US and Europe would freeze all assets, prevent anybody from doing business with China, and ban all Chinese imports.

At the end of the day, China would never set foot on Taiwan, while reaping the whirlwinds of pain from their attempts...

 @FreeTradeBadgerGreen from Oklahoma commented…2wks2W

So what is stopping US from just neutralizing China?

 @AboardHouseRepublican from Georgia disagreed…2wks2W

The US doesn't attack countries for the hell of it. But if China decides to attack Taiwan, we've got their back.

Europeans Abandons Strict Climate Rules While Biden Clings To Them

Europeans are admitting the folly of net zero quicker than their American peers.

The latest example—perhaps “victim” is more apt—is Humza Yousaf, who resigned this week as Scotland’s first minister. That region within the U.K. enjoys substantial devolved powers over its own affairs, including on climate policy. An administration led by Mr. Yousaf’s left-leaning Scottish National Party had hoped to rush ahead of the national government in London in slashing carbon emissions.

A recent report from the U.K.’s Climate Change Committee noted Scotland had fall…  Read more

 @CoatiBuckNo Labels from New Jersey commented…2wks2W

Yes, the climate alarmists tell us the sun and win are free, but they fail to mention that the means of capturing that energy and distributing it is incredible expensive, and that the sun doesn’t shine 24 hours a day, nor does the wind always blow, so both need huge amounts of back-up energy.

Two important facts.

CO2 is not a toxin in our atmosphere. Nor does it have a warming effect, since it is a lagging indicator.No one knows what an ideal CO2 range level might be for our planet.

Maybe we should concentrate on cleaning up all the trash. Especially plastics.

Israel and Saudi Arabia Are Trading Places

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has put his country’s worst religious extremists in jail, while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has put his country’s worst religious extremists in his cabinet.

Netanyahu is trying to make Israel more like the worst of the old Saudi Arabia and M.B.S. to make Saudi Arabia more like the best of the old Israel.

M.B.S., with his laser focus on economic growth after several decades that he has described Saudi Arabia as having been “sleeping,” has unleashed the most important social revolution ever in the desert kingdom —…  Read more

It seems to me in a very short time we have come a long way from accusing MBS of a murder to now hailing him as a reformer. The problem with monarchies is that it all hinges on one person. If something were to happen to MBS, there is no guarantee that Saudi Arbai won't go back on full-throttle religious conservatism.

And that's why democracies, however flawed they may be, are important.

 @RightPorpoiseDemocratfrom Maine agreed…2wks2W

You can be both a murderer and a reformer.

One of the things that prevents something from happening to MBS is his calculated ruthlessness. People fear him and this fear keeps them in check.

Right-wingers who "support Israel" as a proxy for their disdain of left-wing protesters are the functional equivalent of Libs who "support Ukraine" as a proxy for their disdain of Trump/MAGA. Brain-broken by Culture War monomania, which they stupidly displace onto foreign policy

 @ImportedKangarooLibertarian from Pennsylvania commented…2wks2W

People become weary and culture war battle hardened. They no longer question the things said by the thought leaders they have followed for years. They just fall into the comfortable formation they have been following for years because for years those thought leaders were most aligned with truth.

Times change.

 @BrainyEggsGreen from Iowa agreed…2wks2W

When you have no prism for viewing anything other than your monomaniacal contempt for domestic political enemies, you end up landing on positions like: "We must support Ukraine to spite Trump and his lover, Putin" and "We must support Israel to spite blue-haired college girls"

 @DovesBillyWomen’s Equality from Utah commented…2wks2W

The US is a key player in all this. Unconditional support for Israel has created a moral hazard. It has caused Israel to move to the right, and it is paying for all the subsidies that Tom discusses.

The best thing that the US can now do for Israel is to cut off support, and force Israel to the realization that it must live at peace with its neighbors. That is the most pro Israel thing to do.

Oil Price-Fixing Conspiracy Caused 27% of All Inflation Increases in 2021

After a bitter price war from 2014-2016, American Oil Producers got tired of competing on price with the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries, or the OPEC oil cartel, and at some point from 2017-2021, decided to join the cartel and cut supply to the market. This action had the affect of raising oil prices, costing oil consumers something on the order of $200 billion a year.

Yesterday, the Federal Trade Commission released evidence confirming that collusion played a serious role in hiking oil prices at that time. Pioneer Natural Resources CEO Scott Sheffield, a leader in the fracking…  Read more

 @SimilarS0c1alSecur1tyIndependent from Texas agreed…2wks2W

Probably because everyone knows diamonds are a ripoff monoply. But outside of a few industrial uses, nobody actually needs diamonds, they're just bling. Pretty much everybody needs/uses oil one way or another (transportation, plastics, heating, etc.).

 @DiplomacyLlamaRepublican from Minnesota commented…2wks2W

US is producing more oil than at any time in history. How do you reconcile this fact with the accusation of colluding to keep production artificially low? OPEC can't even keep its own members from going over production quotas and they're an actual cartel.

Russia Delivers 29 Tons Of Aid To Palestine

Russia on Wednesday said it sent over 29 tons of humanitarian aid for the besieged Gaza Strip, where more than 32,400 Palestinians have been killed and nearly 74,800 injured since Oct. 7 last year.

A statement by Russia’s Emergency Situations Ministry said on Telegram that a special flight it dispatched earlier in the day has delivered the 20th batch of humanitarian aid to representatives of the Egyptian Red Crescent in the city of El-Arish, who will then redirect the aid to Gaza residents.

Housing Destruction in Gaza Hasn’t Been Worse Since World War II

The world hasn’t seen anything like the unprecedented destruction of housing in Gaza since World War II, and it would take at least until 2040 to restore the homes devastated in Israel’s bombing and ground offensive if the conflict ended today, the United Nations reported Thursday.

The U.N. assessment said the social and economic impact of the war launched after Hamas’ surprise attack in southern Israel on Oct. 7 has been increasing “in an exponential manner.”

It called the level of casualties – 5% of Gaza’s 2.3 million population -- “unprecedente…  Read more

Doom and gloom is unhelpful. Israel has managed to forge functional relationships with Arab and Islamic countries in the past. Countries like America and Japan are now close allies. Israel is a close ally of Germany despite the horrific history. Things can and will change.

In 6 months the IAF dropped double the tonnage of bombs on Gaza than were dropped on the industrial German city of Koln during the entirety of WW2. If that wasn't bad enough, the IDF engaged in the systematic demolition of vast swathes of buildings and infrastructure in a deliberate attempt to render the strip uninhabitable. The aim of course was to facilitate the ethnic cleansing of Gaza as well as the physical destruction of as many civilians as could be managed without too much western upset - which turned out to be quite a lot.
